Doucet to Miss 3-6 Weeks with Sports Hernia

Early Doucet celebrates a touchdown reception against the Packers during the 2009 Wild Card game.

Early Doucet won’t be flexing anything in the near future.  The often injured wide receiver learned yesterday that he does indeed have a sports hernia, which will require surgery.

Darren Urban spoke with Ken Whisenhunt, who explained that the rehab process is normally three to six weeks, but the team is reticent to put a strict time line on Doucet’s return.  If Doucet does return on time in six weeks, however, he would be ready for the Week 7 road game against the Seahawks coming out of the Week 6 bye.

It’s certainly a blow to the Cardinals’ receiving core, but not one that’s completely unexpected.  The team suspected that Doucet came down with a sports hernia when he was removed from the game during Week 1 against the Rams.  The exam with the Cards’ specialist only confirmed those suspicions and prompted the decision to perform the surgery.

Other Injury Updates:

  • RB, Beanie Wells (bruised knee): Urban reports that Wells “did more” in practice yesterday, but the real determination will be made today (9/17) when the team examines how much (if at all) the knee has swelled due to the increase in usage yesterday.  The same assessment will be made Saturday after today’s practice.  His status will most likely remain questionable until game time.
  • WR, Larry Fitzgerald (MCL strain): The team assured that Fitz is recovering from his knee injury on time, but Whisenhunt remarked they have “integrated Steve (Williams) a few more times.  You walk a fine line because you want Larry to be in game shape and the only way to do that is get reps in practice.”  It may seem like the Cardinals are hedging their bets a little by getting Williams more practice time, but I can’t imagine that Fitzgerald won’t make it onto the field.  How effective he will be going forward may be another story.  That Week 6 bye can’t come soon enough for this receiving core.
  • DE, Kenny Iwebema (knee): Iwebema moved up from not practicing at all to light practice.  His status for Sunday is questionable.
  • S, Hamza Abdullah (hamstring): Also moved up to light practice.  Status for Sunday is questionable as well.
