Dockett Looking Forward to ATL Homecoming

Darnell Dockett hopes to line up Falcons' QB Matt Ryan this Sunday, much like he did during the 2008 Wild Card Game.

Check out this great article about Darnell Dockett posted by Darren Urban over at the Cardinals’ Official Website:

Darnell Dockett is going home.

Dockett is originally from Decatur, Georgia, close enough to Atlanta. He came from tragedy, having walked in to see his murdered mother when he was 13. He tweeted earlier this week he was dedicating this game to his mom, and said he may cry before the game.

But Dockett also is taking a message back home, to those who once doubted him and to those who could be him.

‘I get to play in front of my grandmother and all the friends I grew up with and I’m looking for some other people I grew up with, like the neighbor who always called the police on me,” Dockett said. “I’m trying to get her tickets to the game too so she can watch me.’

Dockett said he is going to see some friends and take a handful of needy neighborhood kids shopping.

‘I want to reach out to the young kids and keep them out of trouble, try and show them the positive things,’ Dockett said. ‘When I was growing up no one came back to show me that stuff. It was always the drug dealers and the bad stuff. For me to talk to kids and give them money and take them shopping so they don’t have to steal or rob to get it, no matter where I am in Arizona, I still love the kids, I still love the community and I am not  bigger than where I came from.’

It’s not all a love fest, though. There is a part of Dockett who wants to show something to the neighborhood types that he said counted him out when he was a kid.

‘Neighbors treat you a certain way because you are not as wealthy as them or they look down on you, to go back and show them all things are possible,’ Dockett said. ‘You shouldn’t count someone out. I hope I can get in touch with them even though they probably won’t come because their ego will kick in. It’d be a privilege to show them what I have done with my life and to see what they have done with theirs.'”

The last time Dockett (and the Cardinals for that matter) faced the Falcons was, of course, during the 2008 Wild Card game where the defensive tackle came up with a huge play on the first series of the second half.  Dockett penetrated the backfield immediately on the snap and disrupted a hand off between Matt Ryan and Michael Turner.  Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie scooped up the loose ball and ran in it for the touchdown.  The play erupted University of Phoenix Stadium (trust me I was there) and the Cardinals rode that emotional high all the way to a victory.

  1. This game will be a tough one to win for the Cardinals, but not impossible. Hope Dockett has a great game and shows them how good he is.
