Cards Still Trying to Find a Punt Returner

Rookie WR Max Komar had a disappointing regular season debut, fumbling three times in a win over the Rams.

Arizona tapped Max Komar, who was very impressive during training camp and the pre-season, to return punts during Week 1.  It’s safe to say that Komar’s performance left a lot to be desired.  Not gaining significant or even any yardage on a return is one thing, fumbling twice (though recovering both) is quite another.  To make matters worse, Komar added another fumble inside the red-zone after catching a Derek Anderson pass that would have set up a probable touchdown.

Now that Komar has faltered, another rookie, WR Andre Roberts, will likely get a crack at returning punts.  It’s a role that the Cardinals had in mind for Roberts when they drafted him in the third round.  Roberts has been recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained during Week 2 of the pre-season, but it’s believed that he is fully recovered and ready to compete for the job.

Darren Urban of the Cardinals’ official website also reports that Steve Breaston, who held the punt return job last year, tweeted, “This week will I ‘return’??? hmmmm.”  Urban points out that since the Cardinals are thin at wide receiver with Early Doucet’s groin injury, it’s likely that Ken Whisenhunt will avoid giving Breaston his old job back.  Breaston already contributes enough to the Cardinals as a receiver, tackler, fumble inducer, and all-around game changer.
