Cards to Unveil Black Jerseys against the ‘Skins

Cardinals' veteran strong safety Adrian Wilson models Arizona's alternate jersey.

The Cardinals announced that they will wear their alternative black jersey for the first time against the Redskins in Arizona’s final pre-season game.  The Cardinals can wear the black alternate jersey twice during the regular season.  Those dates haven’t been announced yet, but they will most likely be against the Cowboys on Christmas and the Monday Night Football showdown against the rival 49ers.

Owner Michael Bidwell commented on the addition of the third jersey:

Since unveiling these uniforms in April the response has been enormously positive, particularly from our players who I know can’t wait to wear them.  We saw a lot of fans with the new jerseys at training camp in Flagstaff and they have also been anxious to find out when the team wear them for the first time. We think it’s just one more reason to be excited about the 2010 season.”

Personally, if the team wins a third straight division title I wouldn’t care less if they were wearing red, black, white or fuchsia.  It will, however, be cool to see the new jerseys in action.

I think the Cards should have gone all black. Black helmets and black pants. Have red stripes on the pants. Black helmets with the red bird logo would look awesome. I have a black hat and shirt with the bird logo, and it’s great. Have a thin white border around the bird.

It would be cool to see them in all black, especially the helmets.

Oddly enough, there are very specific rules regarding the colors of helmets. As I understand it, the Cardinals couldn’t change their helmet or face mask color to black even if they wanted to because NFL teams are only allowed to switch back and forth between historic helmet designs.

For example, if the Falcons want to wear their red helmet with the old-style falcon, which is probably the best helmet in the history of the NFL, they can do so and should.

Since the Cardinals never had a black helmet in the past, they can’t just up and start wearing them now. I think they would have to apply to the NFL for the change, a process with which I’m not familiar at all.

League rules don’t allow a change in helmet for alternates. I know cause I thought the same thing. Anyway, these jerseys are fresh.

They look good, but they also look like the Louisville Cardinals alternate uniform.
