Former Eagles RB Westbrook Signs with 49ers

RB Brian Westbrook will be wearing the other jersey pictured above for at least a year.

Let’s talk about some 49ers news because, let’s face it, we’re interested in what they’re doing.  After losing second-year running back Glen Coffee, the 49ers signed former Eagles Pro Bowler Brian Westbrook to a one-year deal.  The 30 year-old running back says that he’s 100% healthy and has absolutely no concussion worries.

He’s expected to provide depth to a backfield that obviously headlines Frank Gore.  The 49ers believe that Westbrook will provide a nice compliment to Gore’s smash mouth style of play due to Westbrook’s pass catching ability.  In addition, the Eagles all time leader in yards from scrimmage should provide another veteran presence in the locker room and on the field.

Westbrook apparently understands that he’s not the feature back anymore.  “Frank has done tremendous things in the past, but I’m going to push him as much as I can, and I’m sure he can do the same for me,” Westbrook said.  “I’m hungry.  Any opportunity I get, I’m going to make a play.”

It’s a decent enough move for the 49ers, especially after losing Coffee.  At the very least, Westbrook should provide a safe easy target for Alex Smith on third down.
