Preseason Week 1 Preview: Texans @ Cardinals

                            vs.

(9-7, 2nd in AFC South)                                    (10-6, NFC West Champs)

Game time: Sat., Aug. 14, 8:00 p.m. ET, University of Phoenix Stadium

Background: For the first time since 2003, the Cardinals don’t play the Denver Broncos during the preseason.  To get things off the ground this year, the Cards welcome the Houston Texans back to University of Phoenix Stadium.  The Texans roll in with the Cardinals still facing plenty of issues on both sides of the ball.  Gerald Hayes and the inside linebacker situation is still up in the air, the Cardinals don’t have a fourth wide receiver, Matt Leinart and Greg Toler have a lot to prove at their respective positions, and the entire offensive line needs to establish itself.

Though some fans may get seriously amped up because football is finally here, remember that it’s just the pre-season and these games don’t count.  The Cards went 0-4 last year during the preseason, including a Week 3 pounding at the hands of the Green Bay Packers.  Above all, both teams hope that everyone stays healthy while ironing out the wrinkles.

Last Meeting: Oct. 11th, 2009, Week 5 @ Arizona, Cardinals won 28-21.

Texans’ 2009 Rankings

  • Passing Yards:                            1st         (290.9 per game)
  • Rushing Yards:                        30th           (92.2 per game)
  • Passing Yards Allowed          18th        (217.9 per game)
  • Rushing Yards Allowed         11th        (106.9 per game)

Texans’ 2010 Season Outlook: Many believe the Texans are poised to finally make a playoff run in 2010.  Their passing game is absolutely dominant with Matt Schaub and newly re-signed Andre Johnson leading the way.  Their defense is very solid with a great rotation of defensive ends and talent at the linebacker position.  Losing Daunta Robinson in the secondary was a big hit, which means the team will have to lean on first round pick Kareem Jackson at CB.  Still, the Texans must contend with Indianapolis in the tough AFC South division, so at best the team is looking for a wild card spot.  A 10-6 mark seems entirely possible, which may grant them a playoff berth.

Cardinals’ Goals

  • Keep everyone healthy
  • Don’t let Matt Leinart get rattled
  • Evaluate Brandon Keith at right tackle
  • Test DRC against mega-beast Andre Johnson
  • Get a look at Derek Anderson and John Skelton at QB
  • Begin to establish the 4th receiver
  • Test Andre Roberts as a punt returner
