ESPN Power Rankings: Training Camp Edition

Compared to most of the preseason rankings so far, ESPN is actually being pretty generous to the Cardinals by ranking them 15th in the NFL, dropping seven spots since the Week 18 edition in January.  Mike Sando comments “keep an eye on youngsters Beanie Wells (RB) and Early Doucet (WR) this season.  Arizona needs them.”   You don’t like to see the Cards in the middle of the pack, but honestly it’s difficult to argue from an objective  viewpoint that they are more than just a middle of the road team at this point.  Despite being the defending back-to-back division champs, too much has happened this off season to simply stamp the guaranteed 3-peat on the Cards.  Don’t get too upset Cardinals fans because everyone knows that Arizona is at their best when they’re the underdogs.

Our good friends the 49ers are ranked 12th, with the following comment from Sando, “the defense is already strong, and the offense is finally in position to improve — if QB Alex Smith is ready.”  While the Cards dropped seven spots, the 49ers jumped seven spots since week 18.  The vote of confidence for the ‘Niners likely stems from the additions of Taylor Mays, Mike Iupati, and Anthony Davis.  In addition, many believe that Michael Crabtree is ready to have a break out season and Vernon Davis will build on his monster 2009 season.
