What’s the Deal with Deuce?

Will Deuce Lutui be protecting Matt Leinart this season?  Possibly, but Lutui has to get himself on the team first.  The Cardinals’ guard still hasn’t signed his one-year $1.759 million tender.   Lutui missed minicamp and won’t sign in time to participate in OTAs, which begin on Tuesday (5/18).  As a result, the first time Lutui may see the inside of the Cardinals’ Tempe complex is for training camp, which means he will have missed the entire offseason.

To make matters worse, mostly for Lutui, if Deuce doesn’t sign before June 15th, Arizona is permitted to drop the tender offer below $600,000 and still keep its rights.  It’s believed that Lutui was trying to make a statement that he deserves a lucrative long-term deal.  Any leverage Deuce may have had disappeared when Arizona signed Alan Faneca.  In addition, the Cardinals are ripe with offensive line depth.  In fact, Reggie Wells, Rex Hadnot, Brandon Keith, and Jeremey Bridges are already going to fight for a playing time.

If Deuce has any hopes of making an impact on the team, he’s got to sign his tender and get to work.  If, on the other hand, Lutui decides he does not want to sign with the Cardinals and the Cards don’t release him, Deuce will not be permitted to sign with any other NFL team this year.

CARDS NOTES:

  • Apparently, Darnell Dockett is at it again with Twitter.  The Pro-Bowl defensive lineman recently mixed it up with 49ers’ tight end Vernon Davis, with Adrian Wilson in the mix as well.
  • Rookie QB Max Hall believes that his time at BYU has left him well prepared for the NFL.
  • USA Today’s Post-Draft Power Rankings puts the Cardinals at 17th, questioning, quite obviously, whether Matt Leinart will be able to replace Kurt Warner.  The 49ers are ranked 15th, as USA Today points to completely unrelated “analysis” that suggests Kurt Warner’s depature may tip the balance in favor of San Francisco.  Rounding out the rest of the NFC West are the Seahawks (24th) and the Rams (32nd).
