Quarterback Brian St. Pierre Likely to Re-sign

It’s rumored that the Cardinals intend to re-sign perennial backup quarterback Brian St. Pierre.  Pro Football Talk reports that St. Pierre’s injured back was holding up the process, but the injury has apparently healed.

St. Pierre would return to the Cardinals as the team’s third string quarterback.  This would make the depth chart read: Matt Leinart, Derek Anderson, and Brian St. Pierre.  Assuming St. Pierre does in fact re-sign, it’s still likely that the Cardinals will pick up one more quarterback, drafted or undrafted.

  • A note on McNabb, Jimmy Clausen, and the Draft: Darren Urban of the Cardinals’ official website remarked on the impact McNabb’s trade has on the Cardinals.  The most immediate effect would obviously be the draft.  Specifically, the likelihood that the Redskins draft Jimmy Clausen has decreased.  As a result, the Cardinals may have to come to an understanding on how they feel about the former Domer.  It’s likely the staff has already at least touched the subject, but the analysis clearly changes on draft day if it becomes a real possibility.   It’s still safe to say the daft focus remains on the defense, but the Cards have given themselves a considerable amount of wiggle room by adequately covering their immediate needs through free agency.  This will hopefully allow the Cards to go for the best talent, rather than the most needed position.  That could be Clausen.  If so, Leinart would certainly remain the starter, but Anderson and Clausen could battle for the backup spot.  This is clearly putting the cart way before the horse, though.
