Porter Kicks Charges

The Joey Porter saga appears to be nearing a peaceful resolution as the Kern County Prosecutor’s office announced that there will be no charges filed against Porter.  As we know, the veteran linebacker was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, resisting arrest, and assaulting a peace officer.

Prosecutor Mark Pafford told The Bakersfield Californian that the district attorney’s office does not believe there’s a reasonable likelihood that a jury would fine porter guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Deputy District Attorney Pafford expounded:

Based upon the information that was provided to us by the [California Highway Patrol], we did not believe there would be a reasonable likelihood that a jury would find Mr. Porter guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of the allegations  With this belief, we thought it was not appropriate for us to proceed.”

It seems unlikely, therefore, that the NFL would seek to impose any penalties in light of the fact that Porter seems to be clear of any legal issues.  Porter reported to the voluntary off-season program on the day it started and he appears to be focused on nothing but football.  While this certainly provided an unwelcome bump in the road, it’s hopefully behind Porter and the Cardinals as a whole.
