UPDATE: The Cardinals’ official website confirms that Matt Ware and the Cardinals have agreed to a one-year deal, though Ware isn’t expected to officially sign until later this week or early next week.
Kent Somers of AZCentral.com reports that safety Matt Ware signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals on Wednesday. Pro Football Talk and other sources, however, erroneously reported that Ware signed a multi-year deal with the Cardinals on March 9th, which Ware’s agent immediately denied. The Cardinals have not officially announced the unrestricted free agent’s return, but if true, it would provide much needed depth in the Cardinals secondary.
The Cards’ secondary floundered last season after Ware suffered a season ending knee injury. Without Ware, the secondary suffered at least three setbacks. First, opponents picked on replacements Michael Adams, Rashad Johnson, and Hamza Abdullah. Although Adams redeemed himself on the final play by sacking Rodgers, the Week 17 loss and ninety-five percent of the Wild Card game were absolutely brutal for Adams. Second, Ware’s proficient coverage allows Adrian Wilson to be a multi-threat weapon by playing close to the line of scrimmage. When Ware is out, Wilson must play more conservatively to make up for deficient coverage. Finally, the Cardinals’ Nickel and Dime packages become much more attractive with Ware in the lineup. Hopefully the Cardinals will confirm the news.
