Football Outsiders has out their list of “The Top 10 unfilled roster holes,” and the Cards make the list with their unsettled DE spot. Here’s the story:
7. Arizona Cardinals: Defensive End
When Antonio Smith seemed likely to depart, the Cardinals’ organization should have planned accordingly and made a move to acquire a defensive end with pass-rushing capabilities to replace him, like the Packers’ Michael Montgomery. Instead, Smith did depart for Houston, while the Cardinals didn’t add a single defensive end in free agency and spent only the 204th pick of the draft on an end, Illinois’ Will Davis. Now, a defense that was 23rd in the league in our adjusted sack rate stat a year ago replaces one of their best pass-rushers with Calais Campbell, who didn’t register a single sack last season.
