The season opener provides an immediate test. The Cardinals play host to the 49ers and can send an early message that they remain the NFC West’s best. Arizona’s 2008 success was largely due to its 6-0 division record and it does not want to start 2009 with a divisional home loss.
Giants Stadium has not been kind to the Cardinals over the years. Since moving to Arizona, the Cardinals are 2-13 playing at Giants Stadium. In Week 7, they get a chance to improve on that dubious record during a nationally televised Sunday night contest.
The Cardinals defeated the visiting 49ers, 29-24, in one of last season’s best Monday night games. The game featured a late goal-line stand by the Cardinals to preserve the victory as time expired. They get another Monday night meeting with the 49ers in Week 14, but this time it will be in San Francisco.
