Former Steelers FB Dan Krieder Inks with the Cards

Steelers Camp Football

The Cardinals continued their trend of acquiring former Steelers by signing veteran free agent fullback Dan Kreider today. This effectively ended the possibility of the Terrelle Smith returning to the Cardinals in 2009.

Kreider played in 11 games for the St. Louis Rams in 2008 before being released on November 26th with just one carry on the season. His previous eight seasons were spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kreider’s career statistics include 144 rushing yards on 32 carries with 60 receptions. The fullback, however, earned his keep by blocking for runners such as Jerome Bettis, Willie Parker, and Steven Jackson.

It seems likely that Kreider will now be blocking for whoever gets the bulk of the carries in 2009. Darren Urban, a writer for the Cardinals’ official website, reports that the 5’11”, 255 lb. Kreiger is a favorite to win the starting fullback position. The Cards’ other two fullbacks, Greene and Castille, have not proven themselves to be an integral part of the offense.
