Grimm Could Be Up for Taking Over the Offense

The Cards need a new offensive and defensive coordinator now that Todd Haley is in KC, and Clancy Pendergast is out as defensive coordinator. Today’s Arizona Republic says that one guy that could get a look to run the offense is that of Russ Grimm, who is on the staff as the O-line coach and an assistant head coach.

Grimm was up for the Steelers head coaching job two years ago, but of course that went to Mike Tomlin, who led the black and gold to the Super Bowl last Sunday over Grimm’s Cards. Some other guys that could be up for the spot include running backs coach Maurice Carthon, receivers coach Mike Miller and tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens. If Grimm does take the coordinator job, the O-line will get a new coach.

“There’s no question in my mind Russ can do either (job),” Whisenhunt said, “but I think you also have to be careful about putting too much on his plate and diminishing the effectiveness of both jobs.”

As far as the defense goes, Steelers LB coach Keith Butler could be an option, as NFL.com talked about that last night, and Ken Whisenhunt wanted to talk to Butler back last season, but the Steelers denied them permission to speak to him. Tomlin has said already that most of if not all the coaching staff will be back in 09, so Butler would again have to find permission from the Steelers to talk to the Cards about that spot.
