Cards and Saints Set for Primetime Battle Thursday

It’s a matchup of NFC rivals as the Cardinals and Saints go head-to-head on a Thursday night primetime showdown on ESPN.

Second year Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt returns with both his coaching staff and virtually all the starters on both sides of the ball from a team that nearly made the playoffs in 2007. The Cardinals finished 8-8 in 2007, their best record since 1998. A few players, through both free agency and the draft, were added for competition and depth but the offense returns all 11 starters while the defense returns 10.

Adding to the foundation Whisenhunt has established in the desert are free agents LB Clark Haggans, DE Travis LaBoy, DT Bryan Robinson and first round draft pick CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who will all push the existing starters for playing time and provide depth.

The Saints, in their third year under Sean Payton, are coming off a 7-9 season in which they dropped their final two games, ending their late playoff hopes.

Next week the Cardinals travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs, the 21st preseason meeting between the two teams. Kickoff is at 5:00 PM.
