Special Win: Cardinals Beat Steelers 21-14

Bryant Johnson makes a grab

It didn’t matter that a lot of the 64,844 were wearing black and gold and waving yellow towels, Sunday’s Cardinals 21-14 win over the Steelers was one to remember.  “After a couple of tough losses this year, this gives us something to build on,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said.  “To come in here against an undefeated team and get a win . . . it makes us feel like we can play with anybody.”

This was a special win for Arizona, as punt returner and 5th round draft choice Steve Breston put the Cards ahead for good with a 73-yard punt return to put them up 14-7 in the 4th quarter.  “I stretched it right and hit a seam,” said Breaston, a fifth-round pick out of Michigan. “When you have a good job (blocking) up front, it is your job to finish the play.”  The Cardinals then salted away the game with a clock-killing drive that eventually ended with Edgerrin James going in from a yard out to make it 21-7.

The story of the day would have to have been the Cards defense, which held the Steelers to just 77 yards rushing, intercepted two passes and allowed them to convert just 5 of 15 third downs. “I thought they just came out with an attitude to get the job done,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said.  They also held top running back Willie Parker in check to just 39 yards on 15 carries.  Job well done.

Now at 2-2 the Cards can look ahead and not dwell on the past.  With their QB combo of Matt Leinart and Kurt Warner, the running game clicking, and the defense playing at a high level, Sunday could be a sign of things to come.  Good things, that is.
